Mermaid is a sculpture created by Oliver Voss on Alster Lake in Hamburg on August 3rd, 2011.

alright, i’ll be that guy:

why is it called mermaid when she has legs?

It’s not called mermaid, the title in German is Die Badende, which translates to “The Bathing Woman” or “The Bather” (feminine).

(Mermaid in German is meerjungfrau, which is pretty awesome, “virgin of the sea.)

Navy Seal training, they have their hands tied behind their backs, are dropped in the water, have to retrieve a face mask with their teeth and swim back up.

Crucifixion, Niki de Saint Phalle, 1965

From the Pompidou Museum, Paris: “Designed to be hung from the ceiling, this giant and weirdly proportioned doll, decked out in suspender belt and curlers like some grotesque emblem of femininity, is one of art’s most virulent and sarcastic commentaries on the female condition. Exposed in the crudest and most obscene nudity, crucified in its sexual identity, this archetypal figure is a vehement critique of the conventional representation of women.”

I went in the ocean tonight, which for me is always profound and spiritual. I thought about all of my friends and everyone in the East who are fighting water, trying to survive water, and I prayed for you as best I can. This is a little bottle filled with ocean that I’m using to focus. I know, I’m dorking out! But I just want everyone to be safe and happy. Love from the Pacific.

"Love me Sophia, in my foolishness, love my words and not my mortal remains. Be tidal to me in the constancy of change. Break over me where I feel most safe, be a shore to me, when I fear I am wave in the water, endlessly slipping away. Lift me up like a shell from the beach, now empty, now full. Lift me up and there are still songs."

— Jeanette Winterson (Sappho, Art & Lies)
