Rockist Science

QUESTION: Does it bother you when female musicians get away with receiving so much help in terms of production/song writing? It’s a fact that there are significantly less female musicians who completely produce all of their own tracks. Whereas most male producers do everything themselves.

ANSWER:  no. i think you see fewer female producers because we live in a patriarchal society that conditions women to think that they can’t produce or make music legitimately without a male helping them. it’s not that female performers just automatically enjoy the benefit of a bunch of people wanting to do all the work for them, it’s that no one will take them seriously as producers or songwriters or artists. whenever anyone asks a girl to be involved in some kind of musical project, it’s almost always to sing or perform and be “eye candy” or whatever. the idea that women can play instruments, produce, and write songs as well as men is an idea that the industry and, imo, the record buying public in general is still being very slow to accept.

ANALYSIS:  Grimesz’s boyfriend is pretty cool. (His first concert was Lilith Fair ‘98!)

People are being awfully rockist about writing these days.

Can we just note

The next time some music writer says Gaga* is “inauthentic” (inauthentic is the new sell-out!) based on the fact that her appearance and style change and she doesnt still look and dress EXACTLY the way she did in high school, based on this:

[A young Lady Gaga, with long dark hair and a t-shirt, playing the keyboards]

That we include THIS in the conversation?

[A young Bruce Springsteen and the other members of his boy band, wearing satin vests.]

*Or Katy Perry or Madonna or whomever.

It’s not like I’m a huge fan of any of those women but the freaking double standard and ROCKISM are SINGEING my THOUGHTS.
