"It strikes me that an outré costume is one very effective way of twisting the patriarchal gaze. The average girl is leered at, commodified, and consumed like many of the girls in The Ravenous Audience; her femininity seems natural or transparent, ready to be seized upon. The costumed lady throws a wrench in this cycle, unravels the loop of the gaze. By distorting and exaggerating, she seems to say, “You thought you knew what femininity looked like, but look again!” Or maybe, like Medusa, she turns you to stone."
